Breast Reduction — When Enough is Too Much

breast reductionThese days it could seem odd that a woman would want to have smaller breasts. After all, in the U.S. breast augmentation was the most popular cosmetic surgery in 2014. But for women with overly large breasts, their breasts can be nothing if not a burden, causing both physical and mental problems.

In these cases, breast reduction with Dr. Hetzler is the answer.

Less can be more

Very large breasts can be a curse for a woman. The excess weight can cause back and neck pain and damage. Bra straps dig into the shoulders. Finding clothing can be difficult. Her breasts can become a hindrance when pursuing certain sports and exercise routines. Some women can become so self-conscious about their breasts that they avoid social interaction, just to avoid the undue attention caused by their breasts.

Breast reduction surgery is known as reduction mammaplasty. The procedure involves the removal of excess skin, fat, and tissue from the breasts. The end goal is to have breasts that are smaller, lighter, and proportional to the body.

The procedure

Reduction surgery is an involved procedure with the patient under general anesthesia. Dr. Hetzler usually opts to make an “anchor” incision around the nipple-areolar complex. The incision extends vertically below the nipple down to the breast crease and then horizontally along the bottom crease of the breast. The nipple-areolar complex is moved upward to the desired position and excess tissue and fat are removed. The entire procedure usually takes around three hours.

In cases where the woman has a large percentage of fat in the breasts, there is a chance that liposuction can be used and the incision needed won’t be as large. Obviously, every patient’s situation is unique.

Recovery

Patients usually return home the same day of the surgery. A surgical bra will need to be worn for a couple weeks to provide support and decrease swelling, and a bra must be worn 24 hours a day for four to six weeks. Most patients can return to work in a couple days, but strenuous exercise needs to be avoided for four to six weeks.
