But volume “loss” with age isn’t only in your ears — your face loses volume and support as you age, particularly after you cross the 50-year-old threshold. People always think of wrinkles with aging, but volume loss can be far more visible, as it affects larger areas such as the cheeks, and it can leave a person’s face looking somewhat sunken.
Volume loss doesn’t need to be a fact of life. What is Juvéderm®?
If you follow the aesthetic industry at all, or if you’ve read other blogs in Dr. Hetzler’s feed, you’ve heard about hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the human body whose job is to hydrate and plump the skin. Unfortunately, it can’t overcome the decrease in collagen (the protein responsible for providing the skin’s support structure) production as we age. That’s why our skin is so saggy, and volume has decreased so much after we’ve had that 50th birthday.
All the Juvéderm® fillers are hyaluronic acid-based and use the hydrating and plumping characteristics to replace lost volume. When injected, Juvéderm® binds with water molecules in the area to firm the skin, add volume, and fill wrinkles.
What do the different Juvederm fillers address?
- Juvéderm® XC
Parentheses are great for factoring in a high school algebra class, but they’re not welcome on your face. These are the lines that frame your mouth. Plus, there are smile lines, otherwise known as nasolabial folds, which run from your nose down to your mouth. You hear about all sorts of “anti-aging” serums and creams, but they only moisturize the skin’s surface. Juvéderm® XC adds volume beneath the skin to smooth these lines and folds.
- Juvéderm® Voluma XC
You may hear Dr. Hetzler call it “age-related midface volume loss.” You call it sagging cheeks. Over time as you lose the collagen to support your skin and as your underlying muscles weaken, your cheeks flatten. Juvéderm® Voluma XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area. Plump cheeks are a tenet of a younger look.
- Juvéderm®Ultra XC
You may not think about your lips with facial aging, but our lips thin as we get older, losing the same support as our skin. Other women have never been happy with the fullness of their lips. Juvéderm® Ultra XC is designed to plump the lips.
- Juvéderm®Volbella XC
This Juvederm option is brand new, coming on the market in summer 2016. Whereas Ultra XC adds fullness and plumps thin lips, Volbella XC is tailored to add subtle volume to the lips and smooth the appearance of vertical lip lines.
