Male Breast ReductionWhile female breast reduction is not uncommon, many men with enlarged breasts don’t even know they too can have surgery to correct the problem. They simply avoid going to the Shore or other situations where they have to take their shirts off, which can affect a man’s self-esteem. Dr. Hetzler performs many of these procedures to correct gynecomastia, and return self-confidence.

Gynecomastia, commonly known as abnormal male breast enlargement, is frequently associated with teenage boys. This is largely due to hormonal shifts around this period, as well as excess body weight gained throughout childhood. But when the hormones stop rampaging after puberty, this type of gynecomastia usually goes away.

Recently, the procedure has received more attention. Patients who used to think their enlarged breasts were simply a part of putting on a little weight or simply aging now look into surgical revision. Older patients in their 50s now consider the procedure. Dr. Hetzler is asked if there is a top age limit for male breast reduction? The short answer is — it depends on.

There is no specific age limit in reducing the appearance of enlarged male breasts via surgery. Older men can still go through the procedure as long as they’re healthy and have no existing health issues that could potentially increase the risk of complications from anesthesia and the surgery itself.

Poor skin laxity in older men can also be a challenge for Dr. Hetzler when performing the male breast reduction. A thorough assessment of skin laxity will be done during your personal consultation. On the other hand, the maturity that comes with age is an advantage as it provides older patients a more realistic view of the surgery. So, know that age alone is NOT a deciding factor in whether or not male breast reduction surgery would be effective.

A quick look at the procedure

Male breast reduction surgery with Dr. Hetzler is relatively fast. Tumescent anesthesia is used to lessen the pain and discomfort during and after surgery. First, liposuction via tiny incisions is performed to remove excess fat. Excess breast glands may be removed through a tiny incision made beneath the areola (the dark portion of nipples). The procedure can take from two to three hours with recovery lasting a week or two.

A personal consultation with Dr. Hetzler will answer your questions about the possibilities of gynecomastia correction surgery. Call us at 732-219-0447 — there’s no reason to miss out on another summer at the Shore.

man boobs gynecomastiaThere’s nothing like summer days at the Jersey Shore, soaking up the sun, jumping through the surf, and watching all the people. But if you’re a man with overly developed breasts that could be the last place you want to be. After all, you’re going to have to take off your shirt! And who wants to wonder if people are talking about your “man boobs” when you walk by?

Want a surprising stat? Roughly 50 percent of all men have abnormally large breasts and a condition known as gynecomastia. Most men don’t know they have it, ascribing their growing breasts to simple weight gain. But in most cases, there’s more to the problem than simple weight gain. Dr. Hetzler can perform male breast reduction with minimal scarring so that you can peel off your shirt with confidence again.

What causes gynecomastia?

In teenagers, male breast enlargement is not a rarity; it’s the norm. This is an unknown fact, but up to 70% of pubescent boys have the condition to some degree at some point in their teenage years. In teens, estrogen and testosterone and the changes they cause in the body are behind their enlarged breasts. Fortunately, once the teenager’s hormones settle down, the condition almost always passes.

In contrast to the well-known causes of teenage breast enlargement, adult gynecomastia is somewhat of a mystery. Like teens, middle-aged and older men can also develop enlarged breasts due to hormone changes that come with aging. But often gynecomastia comes from taking certain medications:

  • Steroids
  • Antibiotics
  • Anti-anxiety drugs
  • Heartburn treatment drugs
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • AIDS treatment drugs

Heavy drinking and smoking marijuana can also lead to gynecomastia.

Reduction surgery

Some men with gynecomastia have a firm, rubbery mass underneath the nipple area. The size of this mass is around 1.5 inches across and it may be sensitive to the touch.

If surgery is required, small incisions are made in the armpits or around the areolae. Through those incisions, excess fat and glandular tissue are removed and excess skin is trimmed. This type of surgery is not always necessary; Dr. Hetzler can simply remove excess fat with liposuction in some cases, leaving virtually no scarring.

If you wonder if your enlarged breasts are beyond the norm of simple weight gain, call Dr. Hetzler at 732-219-0447, and let’s see how we can help.

For men, gynecomastia, or abnormal male breast enlargement, is more than just unattractive. It can be a source of embarrassment, crushing a person’s self-esteem.

Although this condition is not uncommon among adolescent males due to hormonal changes, middle-aged and elderly men often don’t understand what exactly is causing the abnormal enlargement in their chests. Many of these men won’t even talk about their breast enlargement concerns because of social taboos and the female-centric nature of the issue.

So what exactly causes gynecomastia?

Hormonal fluctuations
Male Breast ReductionToo much estrogen in comparison to testosterone is one of primary causes of gynecomastia. This is why the condition tends to subside in adolescent males on its own once they reach adulthood. In adults, the hormonal imbalance may be a consequence of an existing health problem such as adrenal fatigue, liver disease, kidney trouble, and certain types of cancer involving the testes, pituitary glands, or adrenal glands.

Obesity or being overweight
There are two ways obesity can lead to gynecomastia. First, it could lead to higher-than-normal levels of estrogen in the body. Second, breast enlargement is influenced by excess amounts of fat in the chest, common in overweight men.

Other contributing factors
Other contributing factors that can influence the development of gynecomastia include the following:

  • Medications such as anti-androgens that help reduce prostate enlargement, anti-ulcer drugs, anti-cancer treatments, antidepressants, and medications for heart disease.
  • Diseases and health issues that interfere with testosterone production such as tumors in the pituitary gland, adrenal glands or testes, hyperthyroidism, kidney failure, and malnutrition.

You don’t need to suffer with gynecomastia. Call Dr. Hetzler at 732-219-0447 and let’s discuss your options.
